Course overview
This NSW approved course is for people who want a Heavy Rigid driver’s licence. This licence allows you to drive a truck, bus or any other two-axle rigid vehicle—truck or bus—weighing more than 8 tonnes GVM. One-on-one courses for beginners take up to 8 hours.
Heavy Rigid vehicles are trucks that has three or more axles and a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) over 8 tonnes.
These vehicles, can be Buses, heavy rigid tray trucks, heavy tip trucks and Semi-Trailer “Prime Movers (when without trailer).
A Heavy Rigid 'Class HR' covers a rigid vehicle with 3 or more axles and a GVM of more than 8 tonnes. Any towed trailer must not weigh more than 9 tonnes GVM. Also includes articulated buses and vehicles in class 'MR'.
The advanced driver’s course, which requires previous experience, takes up to 6 hours.

Course Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course students will be able to:
- Conduct pre-operational vehicle inspections and checks
- Correctly start, steer, position, manoeuvre, and stop the vehicle
- Correctly manage engine power to minimise gear and engine wear
- Reverse, maintain visibility, and accurately position the vehicle
- Correctly park, shut down and secure the vehicle
- Successfully identify and avoid hazards (defensive driving)
- Safely load the vehicle and use the most appropriate load restraint method
Course Pre-requisites
Applicants must a have a valid NSW drivers licence.(If you hold an interstate licence FHV can also arrange for an assessment. Please call us for information). Must have a current drivers licence card(the paper issued by the RMS is not sufficient.)
A heavy vehicle theory drivers test must be complete and the applicant must have purchased there logbooks from the RMS.
